How do LEGO promotions work?
When a new LEGO set is released, it is initially sold at the manufacturer’s recommended retail price (RRP), whether on the official LEGO website or through retailers such as Amazon, Fnac, or Cdiscount. After a short period, usually a few weeks, retailers begin offering discounts compared to the recommended price, often ranging from 10% to 20% off. By waiting longer (a few months), it is common to find larger discounts, around 30% off, as retailers look to clear stock to make room for new releases. Finally, even better deals can be found during special promotional periods such as Black Friday, towards the end of a set’s retail life, and even through private sales between individuals.
How do LEGO set prices change over time, and when is the best time to buy?
While the price of a set often drops in the months following its release, it is not advisable to wait too long. When a set reaches the end of its retail life, supply becomes limited once stocks are sold out, and buyers must then turn to the secondary market to find it, where prices are usually higher. Because LEGO sets attract many collectors, they tend to increase in value on the secondary market once stocks are depleted at LEGO and major retailers. As a result, buyers should expect to pay more than the original retail price.
To buy at the best price, it is generally recommended to wait a few weeks or months after a set’s release to target a discount of 20% to 30% off the LEGO recommended retail price. Waiting for specific events such as Black Friday can lead to even better deals, but be aware: these promotions usually apply only to a selection of sets, and there is no guarantee that the model you are looking for will be included.
How does Temple of Bricks find the best deals?
The Temple of Bricks price comparison tool is designed to find the best deals in real time by comparing LEGO set prices from major retailers: the official LEGO website, large e-commerce platforms (Amazon, Fnac, Cdiscount, Darty, Leclerc), as well as the secondary market, where collectors sell sets that are no longer widely available via eBay.
To ensure accurate results and reliable availability, our algorithm checks prices in real time with a frequency tailored to each platform’s characteristics: daily for the LEGO website, where prices rarely change, several times a day for major retailers, and in real time for eBay. Each time you visit a LEGO set or minifigure page on Temple of Bricks, the algorithm retrieves the best prices on the market and displays the percentage discount compared to the LEGO recommended retail price.
Which LEGO themes and sets are on sale?
While most LEGO sets eventually become available at discounted prices, this is not the case for all of them. Some LEGO sets are brand exclusives, sold only on the official LEGO website and in LEGO Stores. For these sets, price discounts are rare, but they remain eligible for LEGO offers such as gift-with-purchase (GWP) promotions and LEGO Insiders loyalty points, which can be redeemed for vouchers. These exclusives mainly include adult-oriented sets from ranges such as LEGO Icons or LEGO Ideas, as well as large-format sets in other themes (Star Wars UCS, Harry Potter Collector’s Editions, etc.). In addition, some exclusives are temporary, and sets may eventually become available through other retailers (and therefore sometimes discounted).
True exclusives are therefore relatively rare, and most sets—especially those from popular themes such as LEGO Star Wars, Harry Potter, City, or Technic—are quickly available from retailers and are likely to benefit from discounts.
